This NYT article about Cal State’s overhaul of remedial education prompted the exchange below within TPSE. We’d love more input/opinions from the community!
Jim: A focus on degree completion in place of skills mastery is a guarantee to devalue the meaning of a degree in the market place outside of education and thus incredibly short-sighted.
Alan: I’m hoping that Cal State is pushing for something more innovative – that is, something like an approach which combines regular college-level course with developmental (i.e., mostly mentoring and elements of flipped classroom technique) course. And the strategy seems to be to challenge the system to come up with its own way of bringing about both skills mastery and degree completion.
Jim: I hope you are right!
